BREAKING NEWS -

Let me start by saying happy April Fools, but this is no joke.

As of April 1, 2026, new boater safety regulations in Massachusetts are officially in effect. If you were born after January 1, 1989, you can no longer legally operate a motor vessel or personal watercraft in Massachusetts without carrying a valid boater safety certification.

For those born on or before January 1, 1989, this law will still apply, but not until April 1, 2028, when the same certification requirement goes into effect.

This regulation doesn’t just impact residents, it also affects visitors. Anyone boating in Massachusetts waters, from Cape Cod to Cape Ann, including lakes and rivers, must carry a valid boater safety certificate. Most state issued certifications are accepted, but it’s important to confirm that your credentials meet Massachusetts requirements before heading out.

To make compliance easier, Massachusetts offers both in person and online boater safety courses, making it accessible for residents and out of state visitors alike.

As air temperatures begin to rise over the next few weeks, keep in mind that water temperatures will remain cold for the foreseeable future. Early season conditions can be dangerous, so always prioritize safety and make sure you have the proper gear onboard before heading out.
